Brain Dynamics in Response to Intermittent Photic Stimulation in Epilepsy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose: Routine electroencephalogram (EEG) examinations uses intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) for investigation of the visual cortex EEG responses during resting time. This study aimed to discover brain dynamics effects IPS in 28 generalized epilepsy patients and healthy subjects. Methodology: Signal processing techniques were used feature extraction by Fast Fourier transform (FFT), dimension reduction t-test (significant, p<0.05) classification nearest neighbor (k-NN) support vector machine (SVM). Results: The group had higher level amplitude Theta waves compared group. Alpha time all frequencies observed with lower subjects k-NN (85.7% accuracy) classifier best discrimination from versus at 18 Hz IPS. However, using SVM (75.0% accuracy), 25 yielded between where responded similarly frequencies. Conclusions: shows that are suitable SVM, respectively, discriminate non-photosensitive normal interictal.

Occipital seizures induced by Intermittent Photic Stimulation in Dravet syndrome
PURPOSE Dravet syndrome (DS) is a rare disorder with seizure onset in the first year of life, typically beginning with prolonged febrile hemiclonic seizures or generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Photosensitivity is reported in more than 40% of patients. We present two cases of DS in which we had the chance to record occipital seizures induced by Intermittent Photic Stimulation (IPS). METHOD W...
متن کاملBrain Stimulation for Epilepsy
Ignited by the efficacy and commercial success of cardiac devices, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and biomedical engineers are collaborating to develop implantable brain devices to arrest, contain, and preempt seizures before they cause clinical symptoms. New devices in development deliver electrical stimulation or pharmacologic agents locally to the epileptic focus or deep nuclei to modulate sei...
متن کاملEfficacy of electrical brain stimulation in epilepsy
Approximately 30% of epilepsy patients do not respond to antiepileptic medication, and often require polytherapy and suffer its side effects [1]. Epilepsy therapeutics has seen increasing numbers of antiepileptic drugs, without an increased level of efficacy [2]; therefore, alternative treatments are needed. Based on experimental evidence that electrical stimulation of various targets can suppr...
متن کاملSpectral F-test power evaluation in the EEG during intermittent photic stimulation.
Intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) is an important functional test, which can induce the photic driving in the electroencephalogram (EEG). It is capable of enhancing latent oscillations manifestations not present in the resting EEG. However, for adequate quantitative evaluation of the photic driving, these changes should be assessed on a statistical basis. With this aim, the sampling distrib...
متن کاملOptical imaging of epileptiform events in visual cortex in response to patterned photic stimulation.
In a subset of patients with epilepsy, patterned visual stimuli can trigger clinical seizures. The etiology of this phenomenon, and the complex interaction between functional architecture and epilepsy, were investigated in ferret visual cortex. Optical imaging of intrinsic signals was used to visualize maps of orientation, ocular dominance and spatial frequency. Acute interictal spike foci were...
